Clary sage’s scientific name is Salvia sclarea (1). Others of the same genus (Salvia) are also used in aromatherapy; hence it shouldn’t be confused with those other plants. The essential oil is taken from the furry leaves of the clary sage which gives a grape-like, sweet & spicy smell.

Clary sage got its “clary” name which means “clear” from the same way small particles were taken from the yes to have “clear eyes.” This process is done through soaking after which the clary sage forms “frothy mucilaginous mass.” Long before in the 1800’s, clary sage is added to beer to make it bitter. During extraction, the oil is used for aromatherapy while the solvent extract is used for wines, tobacco, and perfumes.

The most common use of clary sage is as anti-spasmodic, hormone-regulator, anti-depressant, and relaxant. For anti-spasmodic during menstrual or pre-menstrual pain, massage 5 drops of clary sage oil mixed with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil to your lower back and abdomen. For menopausal pain, dab a drop or two of clary sage oil to your nape and behind the ears. For panic and nervous hysteria, add 3 drops in your bath or apply that drops to your midline before going to bath. And then, best to set the mood, dim the lights light candles and relax.
