Eucalyptus oil is used for cold and cough remedies due to its expectorant and mucolytic properties (1). Expectorant means a quality that could dissolve mucus and phlegm, while mucolytic is the same but only with a focus on the mucus. There are many species of eucalyptus, around more than 700 of them, but the most common specie used for extracting essential oil is the specie Eucalyptus globulus (2). To get a pound of this oil, 50 lbs of the leaves is needed. These eucalyptus oils are actually from Australia, Brazil, and Spain (2). The scent of eucalyptus oil is very refreshing to the respiratory tract (3).

As cold and cough remedies, dilute a part of eucalyptus essential oil to a part of carrier oil like jojoba oil, almond oil, virgin coconut oil, etc (2). When the concoction is done, you can use it now directly on your skin (topical), inhale it from the bottle, and boil it in a room diffuser. If you don’t have a diffuser or vaporizer you can place it in a clean spray bottle and then spray it around the house (3). In this manner your mucus and phlegm will be easily dissolved, thereby you could spit/sneeze it out of your body. Since the eucalyptus oil is not just an expectorant and mucolytic but is also antiseptic (removes germs), antibacterial (removes bacteria), and antifungal (removes fungus) you are in a way disinfecting your house when you do the room spraying and diffusing.
